Not just Victory Gardens (WWII), but Liberty Gardens (WWI) and Depression Relief Gardens, as well as various municipal efforts during the Panic of 1893, the 1970’s recession and the 2009 Great Recession. If only we stopped thinking about frugality and productive use of space as an issue just for rough times, right?
